Many of you may have read the book or seen the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. If you haven't, the story is about Savannah native art/antique collector Jim Williams who was charged with murdering his gay lover, the characters familiar to Williams and the case and some of the strange happenings that occurred that eventually helped get Williams acquitted.
Because of the presence of The Bird Girl in the movie and on the book cover, Bonaventure Cemetary was made a popular tourist attraction. Due to tourists disrupting and damaging neighboring graves while posing with the statue, The Bird Girl no longer stands in the cemetary. However, there are many other beautiful statues and sites in Bonaventure Cemetary and that's where I made my first stop on my journey to show you the city.

Very nice! The tree hanging over in that last picture just OOZES cemetary, doesn't it?
Tug, one of the things I love most about this city are the large lush oak trees with the Spanish moss draping them. I was at the cemetary when it first opened in the morning. It was quiet and eerie and the oak trees seemed so alive in such a...ahem...dead place!
Thanks for stopping by my blogs. Some of my best pictures were taken at cemeteries throughout the area.
Great stuff - I'll be checking in often!
I read Midnight about a thousand years ago, but what I liked best was the description of Savannah and the architecture; the murder and the people involved didn't do much for me.
What a unique city.
